Understanding Metal Stitching

Metal stitching is a reliable and effective technique for repairing complex fractures and damaged castings. It involves a series of intricate steps that ensure the structural integrity and functionality of the repaired component. This method is essential for components that require precision and durability, often found in industrial settings like power plants and manufacturing facilities.

Why Choose Metal Stitching?

Choosing metal stitching over other repair methods comes with several advantages:

  • No Heat Distortion:

Unlike welding, metal stitching does not involve heat, thus preventing distortion of the component.

  • Maintains Alignment:

The process maintains the original alignment and surface of the component, ensuring it functions as intended.

  • Stress Absorption:

Metal stitching helps dampen and absorb compression stresses, which is crucial for parts that undergo frequent thermal changes.

  • Cost-Effective:

It is a more affordable solution compared to replacing expensive cast parts, saving both time and money.

Our Metal Stitching Process

Before starting the repair, we conduct a thorough survey of the damaged component. This includes an assessment to understand the extent of the damage and the required repairs. A detailed report is then presented to the customer for approval, ensuring transparency and alignment with the client’s expectations.
The component is carefully positioned and realigned using clamps and special fixtures. This step is crucial to ensure precision during the repair process and to maintain the original alignment of the component.
Using special jigs, we drill groups of holes along the fracture line to the depth of the casting. Pneumatic chisels are then used to connect these holes, creating a shape that matches the keys.
The keys, made from a highly ductile alloy, are inserted into the drilled apertures. These keys are peened into a metal-to-metal condition, making them almost integral with the parent metal. This step restores the strength and integrity of the component.
Next, holes are drilled along the fracture line, tapped, and filled with studs. These studs create a pressure-tight join that restores the component's rigidity. Once installed, the studs are sheared off, and the rough metal is smoothed using pneumatic chisels. The entire repair is then ground until smooth, and a final coat of paint is applied to protect the surface.

Advantages of Metal Stitching

Metal stitching helps dampen and absorb compression stresses, which is essential for parts that experience frequent thermal changes. This makes it an ideal solution for components like cylinder liners and diesel heads.
The process provides a good expansion joint for castings subjected to thermal stresses. This ensures the component can handle temperature variations without compromising its structural integrity.
Metal stitching distributes tension loads away from fatigue points, enhancing the durability and longevity of the repaired component.
Since the process does not involve heat, there is no risk of distortion. This ensures that the alignment and original surfaces of the component are maintained, allowing it to function as intended.

Benefits of On-Site Metal Stitching

  • Onsite Metal Stitching Repair 24/7 by In-House Trained Technicians

Our team of in-house trained repair technicians provides on-site metal stitching services around the clock. This ensures that repairs are carried out efficiently and with minimal disruption to your operations.

  • Minimal Downtime

By providing on-site services, we minimize downtime, allowing your production to resume quickly. This is crucial for industries where time is of the essence and prolonged downtime can result in significant losses.

  • Cost-Effective Cold Repair Process

The cold repair process used in metal stitching is far more cost-effective than purchasing new, expensive cast parts. This not only saves money but also reduces the environmental impact associated with manufacturing new components.
